A new product with the ability to create customizable highlights (reels) for both content creators and our internal video product team.
Role: Lead designer
Team: 1 Product Manager & 2 Frontend developers
Platform: Web-App
Duration: 4 months
Stakeholders: Video
Here are two examples of what our fans had to say about their video experience with MLB...
"NOBODY ELSE IS ALLOWED TO TWEET OUT VIDEO!!!! Accounts get deactivated every single day for tweeting out MLB home runs.
It takes MLB upwards of 15 minutes to get up one clip, if they do at all. And I had to blog it today without a video because I don’t want Barstool to get sued for using illegal video. MLB needs to wake the fuck up."
Nate Blog • Barstool
“I had to cut it and put it all together on my phone,” he recalled. “I said, ‘I have a job to do. People are waiting for this. Hope you understand.’ And I put my head down, did the headphones in one ear and did it as quickly as I could.”
Rick Maese • Washington Post
The pain points of our content creators presented a good opportunity for MLB to shift our strategy from policing illegally shared baseball content to a more offensive strategy of giving fans access to our video highlights.
PRODUCT VISION
• Create an environment (Web-App) where content creators can easily search and create custom HD quality highlights.
• Better understanding of baseball fan's content preferences through their search queries
• Additional revenue stream through non-obtrusive ad footprint
EARLY CONSTRAINTS
Presented with the challenge of creating and organizing strings of search queries that would make sense to the everyday user due to our current inability to use natural language.
Worked alongside with our user research team to better understand the nature of our user's (Bloggers, Youtubers, Baseball Savant) needs and on their search behavior.
